Fun Activities for Multi-Generational Families
Topics: Family Fun
Age Range: Preschool
Multi-generational families offer a unique opportunity for family members of all ages to bond and learn from each other. Whether you live in a multi-generational family or simply live near each other, here are some fun activities for everyone to enjoy together.
- Movie night. Exposure to certain movies can vary by generation, but it’s also a great way to learn more about each other. You can try having everyone pick one or two movies together, or devote one night to a movie chosen by a particular family member in a generation.
- Game night. There are a variety of family-friendly games that are ideal from grandparents right down to young children. Experiment with different types to find which ones your family likes best. This is also an ideal way for your child to learn cooperation and problem-solving.
- Cook or bake together. Food is one of the biggest traditions passed down through the generations. Take advantage of this unique access to older generations by cooking or baking together as a family. If your child is too young to chop or cook, they can get involved by gathering ingredients, pouring, or stirring.
- Give back to the community. Volunteering or doing some good deed in your local area is a great bonding experience, and can show your child how valuable it is to be part of a community. For example, the whole family can select and donate their gently used items together.
- Go for a walk for bike ride. Getting out in the fresh air is fun for the whole family. You can walk through a park after dinner, enjoy a nature hike on a weekend, or ride bikes around your neighborhood.
- Have fun with arts and crafts. People of all ages can express their creativity and have fun with an art project or a craft. Choose an art or craft that’s child-focused, but encourage everyone to adapt it as they like. This is also a great opportunity to help your child develop fine motor skills.
- Take some time away together. If your budget and schedule allow, a family trip can make for a fantastic bonding experience. There are many locations that every family member can enjoy, such as theme parks, beaches, or city vacations. You can even go on a day trip together, saving money on accommodation.
Multi-generational family activities like these are an ideal way for your child to form strong relationships with every member of the family, and for everyone to create lasting memories together.
